Forging a Family of 5 1600 Baja Bug Racers for the Future!

1600 5 VW | Baja Bug 5 1600

Welcome to the Baja Coalition Website

The Baja Coalition is is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization formed to represent, assist, educate, empower, promote, preserve, and improve class 5-1600 Baja Bug off-road racing. Efforts of the Coalition include the support of owners, drivers and sponsors of class 5-1600 racing with larger purses for winners and points champions, by building more sponsor support, pit support, providing a monthly newsletter, and a point of contact for all class racers in our race talk forum. You will also find many other features of interest relating to off-road racing in general on this site including the Off Road Directory.

Visit our Race Talk Forum for discussions on Desert Racing, Off Road Racing, Baja Racing and in particular 5-1600 Baja Bug racing. We also have the latest in class 5 -1600 VW news and photos of desert racing action available in the news area.

The Baja Coalition's 2007 Champion is Brent Shermak-

Competing in the entire 2007 Coalition series Brent Shermak always was out there giving it his all. The points were tight, anywhere from 20-70 points difference throughout the entire year, as  Mike Boone, Art Savedra, Brent Shermak, and Raul Solano fought to keep in front of the other. It wasn't until the very last race of the year that decided who was going to be the Baja Coalition Champion. Brent knew that all he had to do was finish the race to take the Championship. Brent ended up on that last race MDR's "The Bud Light Dash" placing 2nd, by a mere 1.21 minutes behind the Baja Coalitions 2005 Champion's the Deen Team.
Brent's team celebrated heavily that New Years Eve evening as Kristen Flaherty the director of the Baja Coalition presented Brent Shermak with a very large "Happy Gilmore" size check in the amount of $3400.00 for his cash  Championship winnings.
In all he won $1100.00 from the Baja Coalitions purse, $1000.00 from BFG, $1000.00 from Kar-Tek, $300.00 from Fibertech, and a Howe Power Steering Ram, just from his sponsors alone.

  Brent Shermak Driver Profile

Champion of the Baja Coalition 2007 Race Series

Since 1983, five years after watching his first race ever in 1977, Brent Shermak age 18, started racing Motorcross at Saddleback Park. This was start of Brent’s racing career. During those 17 years of motorcross, Brent raced with Orange County Honda, Bassett Racing, JT Series, and achieved many wins including the Western State Nationals, SSM, CRC, AMA, and the SMX titles.

In 2000, Brent had decided to give the 5-1600 class a try, so along with his wife, Jody, and daughter, Brooke, they purchased a 1973 bug, and Shermak Racing was formed. Shermak Racing does all of its own prep and framework, while they send out the motor to Tim Boyle, and always send the transmission to DFT, Dave Folts. Today, Shermak Racing is sponsored by The Shermak family, Superior Fence, BFG, DFT, and Homes by Hampton Bluffs of AZ.

By 2002 “Shermak Racing” took the class Champion title, and finished in the top 20 Overall in points for the SNORE race series Brent’s favorite race happens to be when Jody chased him to the finish line at San Felipe and they both crossed the arched finish line together, as first place finishers. As Brent knows all to well from his 24 years of racing,  “No matter how much it sucks, Never quit!”, “You have to want it to win it”.. “If it wasn’t for our families, we wouldn’t be racing, that and a full stock of Corona’s,” Brent chimes in. Shermak Racing spends endless hours of time prepping the car, as Brent said, “Do we ever stop?”  Race Rituals before each racing event, consist of prayer,…. and John says he never sleeps.

Brent Shermak along with Co-Driver John Kueneman (Bullhead City Funeral Director) both agree that the biggest accomplishment for Shermak racing was “When we were buried alive, and were able to dig ourselves out”. Racing in Primm, Nevada one of the main bolts in the steering column came out and pitched the car down an embankment, upside down in a ravine, encasing the car perfectly, all around. With gas pouring down on top of them and unable to see any light, they literally had “to dig themselves out”

Shermak Racing wants to Thank-

Our families for there support and dedication for what I love to do. To my wife and daughter, Thank you for everything that you do....Love you BDS
