SNORE Make-A-Wish “Wish Ride” 2006

Thumbs upA "Wish Ride" story - get the kleenex out for this one

(this letter sent by Don Wall -SNORE VP-)

This was forwarded to me from Maryetta (Don Wall's mom) this morning... I was so moved by this letter that I contacted Joe Myers and asked his permission to re-print this... Thought I would share with you all:

"I have attached the news letter I sent out to my sponsors. I know you are but; I have to say it, you should be very proud of Don. What he has done for these children is nothing short of amazing. I am a public speaker and I have stood in front of some of the most accomplished business men in the world. Some of their stories are incredible about how they built empires, however none have ever inspired or touched me more then what Don has done. At the end of the day when this life is all over it really isn’t about how much we had or what race we won. That will all be forgotten rather quickly. The things that due matter are the things we accomplish by reaching out and touching peoples life’s with compassion and love. When people find themselves in a position that they feel helpless, and a Don comes to them and reaches out and gives them a break from tragedy, it demonstrates that love and compassion. Don has helped these Children and parents by giving them a day of their own. No illness, no bills to pay. It’s a day to eat hamburgers and ride in race cars. We are all very lucky you raised a man with the vision and passion he has. At the end of the day I can honestly say that Don has made a difference. He has been able to give happiness to the individuals who need it most. I am not sure but; I think that gives him a very special place in everyone’s heart who knows him.

I would like to start this news letter by explaining a man’s vision. His Name is Don Wall. Don is the Vice President of the Southern Nevada Off Road Racing Association. His visions at first blush sounds a little crazy, reckless and even irresponsible but, make no mistake his vision and passion for life is nothing short of inspiring. You see Don had this crazy idea of taking his love for Off Road racing and his compassion for children with deadly illnesses and bringing them together. With this Vision the “Wish Ride” was born. When I first heard of the idea, I thought this guy rolled his race car one too many times. You can’t take sick children with physical limitations and life threatening diseases, put them in a 700 h.p. race car and give them a ride across the rugged terrain of the desert. Well I am a believer today. This weekend my life has been changed forever. I will carry this experience in my heart for the rest of my life. On Sunday, the first of October, Gary from L.V. Coke, Rick from Downey Coke, Kenny and I all went to the “Wish Ride” with the Full Throttle Car. Get ready because the next few paragraphs are going to pull on some heart strings."

The event started at 1:00 p.m. but Don asked that we arrive around 8:00 a.m. Three weeks prior to the event during a phone conversation I found out that his food sponsor had withdrawn his donations. Well, I had met Gary and Jeremy from Las Vegas Coke at one of the many appearances at Wal-Mart. I called Gary and explained what had happened and without hesitation he said he would call his contacts at the retail food centers and get us some help. Jeremy was more than glad to take care of the beverages and before I knew it Gary had confirmation for hamburgers, hot dogs, “Mothers” cookies and of course Coca-Cola beverages. Sunday morning Gary even showed up with a six foot barbeque. Gary, Jeremy and the Las Vegas Coca- Cola Center are truly some of the event heroes."

It was still early in the morning and all the commotion of setting up was still taking place.
Don walked up to me and said we have a special little girl who would like a ride. She has a serious lung disorder and the dust was an issue. She needed to get back to the hospital for treatment and would not be able to stay until the 1:00 o’clock start time. He went on to say that he would be honored if the first ride of the day was given by the Full Throttle Race car. What I did not know is what was about to happen to me. I said,” the pleasure is mine” and we strapped her into one of the fastest race cars on the off road circuit today."

This little girl had several medical issues that she was afflicted with. One of the things impacted her ability to communicate. I was scared to death to give her a ride in the car, because she could not communicate with me to let me know if I was going too fast. With some reservation, I gave her the ride anyway. We drove down the race track, yes, I said race track, as rugged a road as I have driven on. As we were reaching speeds of around 45 mph. she started cheering and sounds of a little girl’s happiness came thru the intercom. I was startled and as I started to slowdown, she reached across and pushed on my accelerator leg and then held my hand. She wanted to go faster! So we sped up. As the speed climbed I put both hands on the wheel. The next thing I heard was laughter and singing. For this brief time she became like ever other little girl; no doctors, no medicine just lots of exciting fun with laughter and singing. The ride was over before we knew it and we crossed the finish line.
It’s funny because today that finish line became a starting line for me. It made me think about how fortunate I am and that I had the privilege to touch the hearts of some of the bravest children in the world. The little girl’s mother walked up to me to thank me. Can you imagine thanking me? I told her the privilege of spending the time with her daughter was something I would cherish for ever. I told her about her little girl singing and cheering. Tears rolled down her face as she said it was one of the very few times she has heard of her daughter communicating. It was truly a Sunday that God’s hand was present. As I sat there recovering I signed a poster and gave her a tee shirt. It’s funny because I sit here and think how small a thing that is to me but, a poster and a shirt will be something that will remind her of the day she became a race car co-driver. Well, let’s move on the stories have just begun."

Before we knew it 1:00 p.m. was upon us, the official start time for, “The Wish Ride 2006”. The Full Throttle Race Car was given the prestigious pole position, first off the line. My co-driver, Ben, is one of the toughest bravest young men you will ever meet. He is about 9 years old. Ben has survived in spite of what the Doctors have said. He has faced death several times and kicked its ***. Ben has had several open heart surgeries and a year ago to the date his parents almost lost him after a heart graph had complications. Today, Ben is a fearless Off Road Race Car co-driver ready to face the rough and rugged terrain of the deadly Mojave Desert. So, at approximately 1:00 we start our engine all 700 hp. thundering behind our heads. Ben is so excited he is talking about 200 mph in the intercom. The anticipation of the green flag dropping and the realization of a man, boys and race car drivers dreams are about to explode onto a desert race track somewhere in Nevada. The green flag drops, and we are off like a shot from a canon! I started that lap like any other race day. I think I got a little caught up in the excitement of the day. As I realized we were hitting 90 mph I started to slow down. Ben informed me we were in a race car and needed to go faster or the car behind us would pass. I assured him no one was going to pass him that day, in fact he was the fastest 9 year old in the world today! In the middle of the track is a jump, it lands on a table top and as far as jumps go very safe. I told Ben what was coming up, and he said “YEA, let’s get some air!!!!” So we did, I hit the jump and pitched the car in the air. An experience we both will cherish forever. We sped around the remainder of the track, and yes Ben was the first to the finish line. I am not sure it’s possible, but I think I saw a smile thru the layers of plastic that covered his face from the helmet he was wearing."

The Full Throttle team continued to give rides and then once again amazingly it happened, a 7 year old boy got in the car. We started our lap and part way in I asked him if we were going too fast. He said “no I think I would like to speed up!” That was OK with me so we went a little faster. He then said “You know they say I am going to die but, I am not scared”. I suppose some dirt must have gotten in my eyes because they started tearing. For those of you who know me I am never lost for words, I found myself in unfamiliar territory. I felt I needed to say something so I asked if we should go faster and he said, “YES!” He had a few more things to say about his life and how lucky he was to be able to ride in a super fast car with the best driver ever. My helmet filled with tears, and I realized that I was the one who was blessed to have been privileged to ride with him. "

This is only a few of the stories. Every driver that day had contact with these very special children. All of us were touched and inspired as we watched parents lift their children from their wheel chairs and place them in a race car. You see we realized anything is possible when dreams come true from one incredible man’s vision and passion."

As this year is coming to a close I would like to personally say,” Thank you” to all of the Full Throttle sponsors. Without your support and help this year, dreams and memories would not have been as complete and rewarding for all those whose lives have been touched throughout this amazing year."
