195 total cars battle it out at S.N.O.R.E.’s BATTLE AT PRIMM February 17th -18th 2007
The Baja Coalition participated in S.N.O.R.E.’s first event of 2007, the “Battle At Primm”. The entire weekend was filled with non-stop action as 195 cars battled it out on a 9.2 mile course within a 1 ½ hour time limit. Each class took off side by side in 30 second increments. Spectators and racers enjoyed the non-stop action on the spectator-friendly course. Whether you were in the pits or in the grandstands set up in the infield, the cars were flying over jumps, zooming past the straight-aways, or rolling over right in front of you. Additional weekend entertainment was provided during intermission by the Rhino race, and the Grande Finale “Powder Puff” race on Sunday.
During the weekend the Baja Coalition served many burgers to the entire racing community and worked the main-pit road crossing, but between the hours of 10:30am – 12:00 pm Saturday and Sunday, the race that we were waiting for began……..
THE 5-1600’s.
On Saturday the race between the cars was the ultimate. Trying to stay in the front of the pack to keep visibility at its max, Rulo battled against a non-Coalition member for first place, while Brent Shermak and Mike Simpson did everything they could to keep ahead of each other. From the start, Simpson and Shermak battled each jump, turn, and straight away the entire race. “We battled the crap out of each other”, said Simpson. “Shermak would be in front of me, then I would get in front of him, we touched tires once in the infield, but clean competitive racing, “What a blast!!” Simpson ended up finishing in front of Shermak by a mere 2 seconds. Mike Boone, Robert Gross, and Shawn George had their own battle, not racing neck and neck but racing against time. 4th, 5th, and 6th place were only separated by 1 minute. Art Savedra had an unfortunate day and fell one lap short of completing the race, due to a flat tire.
Sunday’s race came down to all or nothing. Rulo once again was in the front of the pack with Simpson finishing his first lap just 3 seconds in front of Rulo. Unfortunately for Simpson, he lost his motor on the second lap coming around the last turn heading back towards start/finish. This left the playing field open for the rest of the 5-1600 pack. Mike Boone held his physical position, while Art Savedra was able to throttle down to 4th place.
The 5-1600 Baja Coalition finishers of the event in order: Rulo, Shermak, Boone, George, Gross, Savedra, and Simpson. Official Results are posted on page 3. Thanks to SNORE for an incredible event, Baja Coalition Members, and the Support from the Baja Coalition Sponsors for a successful and enjoyable race weekend.

SNORE “Battle At Primm” Race Results
End Results-
BFGoodrich Tires is proud to once again sponsor the 2007 Baja Coalition. We began our relationship with the Coalition in 2006 and enjoyed our partnership this first season. Please notice that I did say partnership, because that is what needs to happen between a sponsor and sponsorship recipient. Sponsorship used to be “give me something and I will put your name on my car”. Those days are gone for the most part. Now a good sponsorship “partnership” provides a sponsor with one or two of the following items; Sales, Brand awareness and/or technical exchange.
BFGoodrich Tires continues our involvement with the Baja Coalition based on the opportunity to expand our brand awareness and tire sales opportunities. Thank you for your support of BFGoodrich Tires and good luck to all competitors! JD Motorsports- GM- Frank De Angelo
Currently 2nd in Points for the Baja Coalition 2007 Race Serie
Since 1983, five years after watching his first race ever in 1977, Brent Shermak age 18,started racing Motorcross at Saddleback Park. This was start of Brent’s racing career. During those 17 years of motorcross, Brent raced with Orange County Honda, BassettRacing, JT Series, and achieved many wins including the Western State Nationals, SSM, CRC, AMA, and the SMX titles.
In 2000, Brent had decided to give the 5-1600 class a try, so along with his wife, Jody, and daughter, Brooke, they purchased a 1973 bug, and Shermak Racing was formed. Shermak Racing does all of its own prep and framework, while they send out the motor to Tim Boyle, and always send the transmission to DFT, Dave Folts. Today, Shermak Racing is sponsored by The Shermak family, Superior Fence, BFG, DFT, and Homes by Hampton Bluffs of AZ.
By 2002 “Shermak Racing” took the class Champion title, and finished in the top 20 Overall in points for the SNORE race series Brent’s favorite race happens to be when Jody chased him to the finish line at San Felipe and they both crossed the arched finish line together, as first place finishers. As Brent knows all to well from his 24 years of racing, “No matter how much it sucks, Never quit!”, “You have to want it to win it”.. “If it wasn’t for our families, we wouldn’t be racing, that and a full stock of Corona’s,” Brent chimes in. Shermak Racing spends endless hours of time prepping the car, as Brent said, “Do we ever stop?” Race Rituals before each racing event, consist of prayer,…. and John says he never sleeps.
Brent Shermak along with Co-Driver John Kueneman (Bullhead City Funeral Director) both agree that the biggest accomplishment for Shermak racing was “When we were buried alive, and were able to dig ourselves out”. Racing in Primm, Nevada one of the main bolts in the steering column came out and pitched the car down an embankment, upside down in a ravine, encasing the car perfectly, all around. With gas pouring down on top of them and unable to see any light, they literally had “to dig themselves out”
Shermak Racing wants to Thank- Our families for there support and dedication for what I love to do. To my wife and daughter, Thank you for everything that you do....Love you BDS Thank You John for being my co-driver--- Brent To Beth, Darrian, Reese- Thank you for your understanding and support. Love JDK
In addition to racing in Coalition events, there are many areas where your expertise can better the Coalitions efforts as a whole. Forging a family of 5-1600 racers is a primary goal of the Coalition. Families need to work together, and the help of your 5-1600 teams in the following areas would be most appreciated:
Ø Event Promotion Ø Contingency Coordination Ø Tech Inspection Ø Items of interest for Coalition Newsletters & website Ø Pit Support Ø Production of promo materials Ø Identification of Sponsors
